Player Evaluations + Spectator Expectations

Player Evaluation

The first official week of practice will serve as our evaluation week, and we will attempt to divide into two squads by the following Monday.  As always, rosters are somewhat fluid, and players may find themselves moving back and forth between squads based on performance, effort, attitude, or injury.  Before we begin, I'd like to state that the coaches will not entertain conversations about playing time or positions, and will also refuse to discuss information regarding other players on the team.

Spectator Expectations

Over the years, I've been approached by players who are confused by the multitude of messages they receive while on the field from coaches, players, and spectators.  Where, when, and how to pass... where to make runs... who or where to mark - are common directives given by people surrounding the field.  These messages often don't align with one another, so I'd like to fill you in on our playing philosophy for this season (and for future seasons) so that we can ensure that everyone shouting encouragement is delivering the correct message.

1.  We recover the ball as quickly as possible when we lose possession.  When possession is lost, all players are expected to pressure the ball heavily for those first 5 seconds before regaining their normal defensive shape.  This tactic is known as "pressing," and our players will be instructed on how to press from different positions.  To help reinforce this idea, encourage players to "PRESS" when we lose the ball.

2. We pass the ball to players.  This sounds simple, but that's on purpose.  Players will be encouraged to find their teammates with a pass rather than kicking the ball upfield as far as they can.  Our formation sets players up in great positions to pass with one another.  Nobody expects basketball players to throw the ball down the court aimlessly when they are under pressure, and the same is true in soccer.  Unfortunately, players learn at an early age that making the "big kick" gets the cheers.

3. All players attack, and all players defend.  Our players should function together as one unit, with their focus constantly switching between attack and defense.  No player is strictly attack, and no player is strictly defense.  Our goal is to pressure the opposition into mistakes, while attacking with as many players as possible.  Defensive players support our attack, just as attacking players are our first line of defense.
